Last week, I did a post on Bagan, but seeing it lit up by night was so magical I had to give it its own post to showcase the beauty.
We really enjoyed the full moon. When it rose, it was glowing orange. We pulled over in a field to take a picture of its beams shining between the stupas. We also enjoyed looking at the intricately carved temples by moonlight and admiring the moonlight reflecting off of the gold pagodas. One of the very best moonlit adventures though, was special to the Full Moon of Thadingyut holiday. All around one of the pagodas, monks lit candles and their light shone out into the night. Some of the other temples were draped in sparkling Christmas lights. Thadingyut Festival (the end of Buddhist Lent) celebrates Buddha’s descent from the heaven after he preached the Abhidhamma to his mother, Maya, who was reborn in the heaven.
I really don’t think you can come to Myanmar without visiting Bagan. It’s gorgeous and unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. If possible, come SOON! Before the big hotels and chains and big tourism industry ruin the sweet village vibe. Now, it’s a wonderful place to get a little lost and explore. Bagan is a truly unique adventure.
